The Powerdance...

Known as the Philippines’ premiere company in Modern, Jazz and Showdance, Douglas Nierras Powerdance is internationally recognized and respected as a Contemporary Dance Company. It was formed in 1988 by Douglas Nierras with the vision of teaching, performing and sharing the art of dance and making it accessible to a greater number of audiences, especially the youth. Receiving no regular government or private subsidy, the company aims to do its own share in the promotion of contemporary Filipino Culture and help develop a more sensitive public by sharing that unique dance experience peculiar to Douglas Nierras Powerdance. For the past 20 Years, it has carried this vision by presenting self-produced annual concerts dealing with a variety of issues and inspirations, from the spiritual to the mundane, historical to the contemporary, global to the domestic, the most sophisticated to the colloquial, all done with a brash, challenging, thought provoking, and very distinct choreography-with-an-edge that has been a Nierras and Powerdance trademark ever since.

Douglas Nierras Powerdance has gone a long way from appearing on the television show “SHADES” in 1988, barely four weeks after it was formed. Later came television show “RSVP”, and since then the company enjoyed notable performances on television, stage and the cinema locally and abroad.

Douglas Nierras Powerdance has represented the country on several occasions including the “FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE JAZZ DE MEXICO” (1990), the”ASEAN FESTIVAL SONGS” in Singapore (1989-94), THE EAST MEETS WEST” Economic Summit (1995), and as the finale performers for the “ASIA DANCE FESTIVAL’ in Tokyo (1996). In March 1998, Douglas Nierras Powerdance performed an all- Filipino repertoire at the Lincoln Center as part of the Philippine Centennial Celebration in New York City. Douglas Nierras Powerdance invaded the limelight at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre when it graced Jewelmer’s “Hong Kong Jewelry and Watch Fair’ in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and at the Musee National D’Histoire Naturelle for “Golden Philippine South Sea Pearl in Paris” in 2007. The company showcased world-class Filipino talent at the Asia Pacific RIM Festival of Culture in Detroit and at the Philippine American Heritage Festival in Seattle last May 2007.

1964 - 2009

Francis Magalona born October 4, 1964. also known as FrancisM, Master Rapper, and The Man From Manila, was a prominent Filipino rapper, songwriter, producer, actor, director, and photographer. He is also credited as being the first Filipino rapper in the Philippines to successfully crossover to the mainstream. He was also popularly known as the "King of Pinoy Rap" and was considered one of the most idolized, celebrated and influential rappers within the genre.A sibling of nine brothers and sisters, Francis Magalona was the son of late Philippine movie screen legends Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran. The late Senator Enrique Magalona was his grandfather and his late grandmother was a faith healer named Pauliene.Married to Pia Arroyo, they have eight children: Unna, Nicolo, Francis Jr., Elmo, Arkin, Clara, and actresses Maxene and Saab. He also joined the fraternity Alpha Kappa Rho in the 1980s.Magalona, 43, was diagnosed on August 8, 2008, with leukemia at the Medical City Hospital, Pasig. He appealed for privacy. I dont want a media circus. I want privacy with my family. What Id rather talk about is how we can solicit blood donations to replace the supply that I have consumed in the hospital. It was very gradual, hindi siya biglaang lumabas (it did not come out so suddenly). We dont want to use the word curable, but the doctors say its treatable. —Pia Arroyo-Magalona, Francis wifeAfter his treatment and discharge, he made his return on Eat Bulaga together with Ely Buendia, who was also recently discharged. On March 6, 2009, it was reported that Francis Magalona succumbed to acute myelogenous leukemia at 12:00 noon that day, a few days after his fourth chemotherapy session and a few days before his supposed stem cell transplant. The announcement was first made on the variety show Eat Bulaga! where he served as a host prior to his health problems. A short tribute to the artist was aired after the announcement. A minute of prayer was also observed in remembrance of Mr. Magalona in the noontime TV show EAT BULAGA .
